Hanging herb garden

I kill most everything I plant in the ground or in a pot, so I thought I’d take my herb garden vertical this year. That ought to do the trick, right? I’ve seen this idea floating around Pinterest, but can’t find the original source.

I’ve never successfully grown herbs before, but with all the cooking we’ve been doing, I want to have some fresh ones on hand. Then I’ll have to figure out how to use them, IF I can manage to keep them alive.

I bought a cheap shoe organizer from Target and hung it off the side of the deck. I decided to secure it with rope instead of the metal hooks that came with it. I didn’t think they could support the weight once the dirt was in it. I also secured it midway to the deck with rope and put a couple of rocks in the bottom pockets. With the crazy wind in Kansas, you just can’t be too sure.

I filled each pocket with potting soil. It took a whole bag to fill the pockets.

Then I planted the seeds (and one plant) in the pockets. I planted mint, thyme, cilantro, oregano, parsley and basil. I also planted some flower seeds in the lowest pockets.

I managed to get this finished just before the violent thunderstorms came through, hopefully it survived the crazy winds that went through!
